The History museum is housed on the third floor of the Springfield City hall building. Located at the Northeast corner of Chestnut Expressway and Boonville, this National Register Historical Site celebrated its 100th anniversary in 1994. Built at a cost of $133,960, this magnificent stone structure served as the United States Customs House and Post Office when Springfield was a city of 22,000 people. From 1938 to 1992, the building was home to the Springfield City government. For seven decades it has witnessed the major decisions that shaped and molded Springfield into our city of today. It is truly an appropriate site for the History Museum with its expanding collections and exhibits.
