Sanitary Landfill

Noble Hill Renewable
Energy Center - This partnership project between the
City of Springfield and City Utilities generates electricity
from landfill gas at the Springfield Sanitary Landfill. Read

Springfield is continuing to focus on reducing
its solid waste stream through precycling, recycling, reuse,
and numerous other means; however, the Springfield Sanitary
Landfill remains a vital part of Springfield's voter-approved
Integrated Solid Waste Management System (ISWMS). As a City
Enterprise Fund, the ISWMS is not supported by general tax
revenue. Landfill tipping fees are the major funding source
for the ISWMS, in addition to donations and revenues generated
by the sale of Yardwaste Recycling Center products and services.
The Springfield Sanitary Landfill provides efficient,
reliable, and environmentally secure disposal of those municipal
solid wastes that cannot be feasibly recycled or reused. At
present, these wastes represent 60-80 percent of Springfield's
solid waste generation. This facility also provides for the
proper disposal of those non-hazardous commercial, industrial,
and residual wastes requiring special handling to meet state
and federal regulations. By providing a convenient, low-cost,
solid waste disposal option, the City's Sanitary Landfill
also supports efficiency and competition in the region's waste
management system, resulting in lower waste management costs
for businesses and residents throughout the region. In addition,
through fees paid to the State of Missouri each year, the
Springfield Sanitary Landfill generates over $200,000 to support
recycling, waste reduction, and illegal dumping prevention
programs throughout the state.

Approved Disposal
of Sharps/Needles Generated by Households/Residences
(Note: This information is applicable to individual
residences only. All other generators of infectious waste
are regulated and have treatment, transportation, and certification
requirements.)
By following these simple steps you can protect the
health of those who handle your solid waste and comply with
Missouri Solid Waste Management regulations.
• As sharps are generated they should
be stored in a safe, secure place out of the reach of children.
• Sharps must be disposed in a rigid,
leakproof, and puncture-resistant container prior to disposal
with your household waste.
• A plastic liquid laundry detergent
bottle or a one gallon antifreeze jug is a good container
for sharps.
• Manufactured sharps containers are
available from pharmacies.
Step 1: Obtain a detergent bottle (preferred),
or antifreeze jug. Drop sharp end of object first. Reseal
bottle or jug. Store in a secure place. When placing your
used sharps in the container do not replace the protective
cover over the needle or break the needle. This exposes you
to the possibility of sticking yourself.
Step 2: When the container is nearly full
add a solution of one part chlorine laundry bleach (Purex
laundry bleach or other 6% sodium hypochlorite bleach) and
nine parts tap water. You may want to wear gloves when handling
bleach as it can damage tissue. Let the solution set for thirty
minutes.
Step 3: Carefully pour all the liquid into
the sanitary sewer. You may want to hold the cap near the
mouth of the container to prevent sharps from falling out.
Your bathroom stool may be a good choice.
Step 4/5: After all the liquid has been
drained, reseal the container and wrap it with duct tape.
This will prevent the cap from coming off and alert waste
handlers of the special contents.
Step 6: Dispose of the container with your
regular household waste. Your hauler should be advised you
generate treated sharps. This will allow the waste hauler
to take special care when they pick up your waste.
If you have any questions concerning special wastes
or recycling please feel free to call 864-1904 or 864-2004.
