The Fire Department:- has 12 strategically located fire stations which provide fire protection to approximately 84 square miles
- employs more than 200 people
- has an annual budget of about $16 million
- was created in the 1840s as a volunteer department and became a paid department in 1897
- responds to more than 13,000 calls annually (including nearly 8,000 medical calls)
- conducts over 350 inspections by fire marshals and over 1,500 business inspections by fire crews annually
