Advisory Committee for Civic Park (now JVP)   News Releases

The concept of Civic Park grew out of discussions and ideas from Springfield area citizens. The idea to have public space within the Center City area to create a sense of place and a sense of community came from the citizens involved in VISION 20/20. This concept was picked up by other citizen groups, and the community embraced the idea of a Civic Park in our Center City. It makes sense that the master plan for Civic Park be developed in concert with citizens from our community. It is important that the citizen-based process continue as a master plan is developed for Civic Park. Ultimately, the Park Board and City Council will implement any master plan that is developed; but the plan they implement should have the support of the community and the many citizen volunteers that initiated this concept. This is being accomplished through the appointment of a Civic Park Citizen Advisory Committee.

The Civic Park Advisory Committee is working with staff from the Parks Department and Planning and Development Department to review and recommend a process for Civic Park master plan and to serve in an advisory role for development of that master plan. The goal will be to develop a master plan by fall of 1999.

Membership in the Civic Park Advisory Committee relates back to the citizen groups involved in the concept of Civic Park and the other developments in the Center City area. Specifically, VISION 20/20, the Mayor's Commission on Travel and Tourism, the Committee for the Future, and the Convention and Visitors Bureau are represented on the Committee. The key to the committee is the continuation of the citizen advisory concept initiated in VISION 20/20.
