The section to be cleared is between St. Louis Street and East Trafficway, from
Hampton Avenue to the east side of the Hammons Tower parking lot.
Rensch Construction was the low bidder on the project and has been awarded a
contract for $163,000. The Billings firm will begin by capping the sewer lines
and removing asbestos from the former motel at 1001 St. Louis St.
Other properties included in this demolition contract are 946, 953-954, 1000,
1034 and 1050 E. Trafficway and 1015, 1019, 1019-A, 1025-A, 1045 and 1101 St.
Louis St.
Clean fill from the demolition will be deposited in the nearby quarry at East
Trafficway and National Avenue. Other materials will be taken to the landfill
or to an approved disposal site.
The property is being cleared for surface parking for the baseball stadium,
which is planned on the north side of East Trafficway. The City of Springfield
will own the surface parking for the privately developed baseball stadium.
Demolition of the motel is expected to be completed by Feb. 6. The rest of the
demolition should be done by April 8, 2002.
