Landscaping & Environmental Feature Ideas

  • A botanical area, a butterfly garden, or an arboretum, as well as an opportunity to interact with water in different forms would be wonderful attractions as well as opportunities for educating.
  • Natural gardens using plants and flowers that are indigenous to Missouri. They should be nearly self maintaining gardens that would not require excess weeding, pruning, etc. They could use many xeroscape techniques. Garden clubs should be encouraged to show off their techniques and skills in setting up a varied approach to these gardens. The gardens should also be photogenic all year round. Seating could be incorporated to discourage getting off paths and encourage appreciation. Different areas in the park would/could appeal to different age groups.
  • Get lots of shade trees in there, but make sure they don't block street-level views across the park.
  • How about a "Shakespeare Garden" planted with all the plants mentioned in his plays?
  • Leave any trees that can be designed around, and utilize rock construction (like at the east end of the square) whenever possible.
  • Let the people do some of the planting, landscaping, etc. - under professional guidance, of course! Everyone will feel connected!
  • The quarry on North National would make a beautiful four-seasons park. Garden clubs and local horticultural classes could be assigned certain areas and be responsible for planting blooming and/or colorful plants in the spring, summer, and fall, using containers.
    • Winter: Spruce and pine trees could be planted to be the beauty in the winter seasons, particularly after a snowfall.
    • Spring: Tulips, hyacinths, daffodils
    • Summer: Many choices
    • Fall: Chrysanthemums, all colors
  • Tree Nursery Develop a tree nursery to begin immediately the transplanting of significant salvable trees that are in the path of construction in the park. Small caliber trees can be planted now to have the benefit of one or two growing seasons and then transplanted later. The Nursery can continue operation as the park comes on line for future phases or for maintenance and in-fill work.
  • Community gardens. Each person could grow what they wish.
