Questions about Cloth Diapering

Posted on September 13, 2016 at 3:59 PM by Tara Hall

Isn’t it expensive?
While cloth diapers require a bit more initial investment than disposable diapers, the money spent over time is considerably less. The average family spends between $1,600 and $2,500 per baby on disposable diapers over the course of about two years. With cloth diapers, the same family will only spend between $400 and $700 over the same two years. Also, if you keep diapers between children, the cost will be even lower after your first child. Here’s the breakdown of cost:
Initial Purchase $200-$300 for first child
Home laundry (line dry) $100 per year
Home laundry (machine dry) $200 per year

What about when I’m away from home?
You’re going to pack a diaper bag even if you’re using disposable diapers, and it isn’t any different when using cloth diapers. Just pack some cloth diapers, wipes, and a waterproof bag for dirty diapers.

Alright, but what about the poo?
Before your baby starts solid foods, there’s nothing to do except put the diapers in the wash. Once your baby starts eating solids, you just shake the poo into the toilet before you put the diaper in the wash. There are methods to deal with messier diapers, from diaper sprayers to the “dunk and swish” method, none of which are as gross as you are probably imagining.

It’s confusing and I don’t know where to start.
We admit, the strange terminology and the vast amount of resources on the internet can be overwhelming. The Southwest Missouri Real Diaper Circle has a cloth diaper parent group that meets once a month, as well as a Diaper University class where they walk you through the confusing stuff and help you get started.

I think I want to learn more.
Interested in learning a bit more about cloth diapering? This Saturday, April 18th, the Southwest Missouri Real Diaper Circle and Cover Your Bum Cloth Diaper Bank are hosting the Springfield site of The Great Diaper Change, an international cloth diaper awareness event. This event is in conjunction with the Ozarks Baby Expo and will be held at the Farmers Market of the Ozarks from 8 am – 1 pm. Check out the event’s Facebook page here:
