City Attorney

The City Attorney assists the City Council, City Management, and all City Departments with matters of municipal law and seeks creative solutions to issues within the confines of the law.

Ordinances and resolutions that come before the Council are routinely written by the legal staff. Bonds and financing, zoning matters, annexation of land, collection of monies owed the City, condemnation of land, and preparation of contracts are a few of the services provided to other departments.

The Prosecutor's Office represents the City in prosecuting violations of City Ordinances. It also handles Citizen Complaints and provides information services to citizens including DWI mock trials, seminars for local businesses on shoplifting and other violations, and presentations to citizen groups such as Neighborhood Watch and civic organizations.

Legal Counsel to Boards

In addition to serving other City departments, the City Attorney is available as a resource to members of volunteer boards and to Springfield City Council to answer questions about potential conflicts of interest.

The City Attorney represents the City in all legal matters including civil actions brought by or against the City.

Filing a citizen complaint

Any citizen of Springfield may file a citizen complaint with the City Prosecutor's Office. Complaints are taken by appointment with legal technicians in the City Prosecutor's Office.

Additional Information

Two Municipal Court judges appointed by the City Manager hear cases that come before the court. The City Prosecutor represents the City in all ordinance violations before the Court, located at 625 North Benton Avenue.

Cases that routinely come before the court include driving while intoxicated, tow hearings, common assault, probation hearings, and a variety of other violations of City ordinances ranging from traffic violations to shoplifting.
