Phase 2 Subsurface Investigation
4535 W. Chestnut Exressway
Date of Report: July 18, 2008
Assessment Funding: EPA Petroleum Assessment Grant
Acres: 1.07
Site Background
The assessor conducted a Limited Phase II Subsurface Investigation at 4535 W. Chestnut Expressway due to the previous presence of a bulk oil facility in the late 1930s to the 1960s and a diesel truck repair present from the 1960s to the 1970s. This historical use of the Site was identified during Phase I Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs) conducted in January 2008 and in February 1999. A Limited Phase II Subsurface Investigation conducted in March 1998 identified the presence of petroleum-impacted soil in the southeast portion of the Site at that time.
Findings
At total of ten soil samples and two groundwater samples were collected at the property in July 2008. The soil borings were placed in areas of the Site where petroleum impact could be present based on the historical research conducted during the Phase I ESAs and the findings of the 1998 Phase II. These areas included one boring placed the northeast portion of the Site where several aboveground storage tanks (ASTs) were previously located, three borings placed in the central portion where ASTs were also previously located and one in the southeast portion near the location of petroleum impact identified in the 1998 Phase II subsurface investigation. Based on the analytical results for the soil and groundwater samples taken during this investigation, a reportable release of petroleum products was identified in the southeast portion of the Site. Additional investigation is recommended.
