City Ambassadors Program (CAmP)
Why become a CAmP participant?
We all work within a large, complex, and exciting organization. There is more happening at the City every day than any of us can fathom. What if you were given an opportunity to learn more about what happens here and see how all of the parts of City government fit together? What if you were given an opportunity to learn new skills and meet new people - people you probably see on the sidewalk or in the hallways now, but don't know? Would you take advantage of that opportunity?
While the program has been designed and will be coordinated by the City Manager’s Office, departments and individuals from throughout the City are participating in the delivery of the curriculum to ensure participants receive a 360-degree view of the city and the services local government provides.
As you learn more about your City government, your appreciation for what it does, how things happen, and how you contribute toward its mission will grow. Graduates will truly become "ambassadors" for the City.
CAmP was developed to achieve four objectives:
- provide employees an opportunity to learn about all of the departments and divisions within the City’s government services
- provide interesting and fun professional development opportunities to employees
- promote a better understanding by employees as to the value of their role within the City and their contribution toward our mission
- foster increased communication across departments and divisions by creating a bond among the members of each class
The curriculum of the CAmP Program consists of two types of sessions that are intermingled throughout the program year.
The first type of sessions introduces the class members to areas of the City they may not to get to see and learn about during their daily work routines. You will have an opportunity to tour parts of the City, learn about the various City departments, and ask questions along the way.
The second type of session provides specific skills enhancement training to the class members. This session is taught by a professional trainer who will provide an interactive and enjoyable learning experience. The training topics should allow the learned skills to be applied to any job type, and perhaps even in your personal life.
2013-2014 CAmP Log
November 2013: CAmP visits Art Museum, Economic Development, BDS
Cold! Yes, that was the weather for the CAmP day in November as we experienced a typical wintry day for BDSís building inspectors. The group spent some time on site going through the inspection process for a hotel still under construction in southeast Springfield.
Most CAmPers didnít realize the detailed process inspectors perform to make sure new or remodeled buildings are safe before occupancy. Planning and Economic Development offered better understanding of how projects go from plans to an actual building, and how the City works with local entrepreneurs to help open new, local-flavor businesses.
The last stop of the day was the Art Museum. We learned how the staff there introduces art to local fifth- graders on special field trips to the museum. We also had a little fun with extra cameras shooting some Julie Blackmon-inspired photos.
September 2013: CAmP visits Public Works, 911 and OEM
The CAmP class of 2014 started the year with a fast-paced day with Public Works, Springfield-Greene County 911 Emergency Communcations and Emergency Management.
The morning and early afternoon were spent learning how to operate a backhoe, getting behind the wheel of a dump truck, pouring concrete to create a new sidewalk, exploring a box culvert, and actually using a sweeper truck to sweep some streets.
CAmPers also had the opportunity to understand the Traffic Management Systemís controls and how it affects the stoplights we all maneuver through each day.
Public Works staff provided prizes for the Best Backhoe Operator (awarded to Jason Denney - IS), Best Dump Truck Operator (awarded to John Copelin Ė Environmental Services), and Best Sidewalk (awarded to Ben King - Police). Everyone had a great learning experience.
