The City of Springfield offers challenging employment opportunities
to men and women interested in careers in public service at the municipal
level. Positions are periodically available and offer qualified applicants
a variety of opportunities to develop careers in their areas of interest.
City
Government
Springfield city government is based on the Council/Manager system.
By Charter, the City has eight Councilmembers who are elected for
four-year terms on a non-partisan basis, and a Mayor who is elected
for a two-year term. The City Manager is appointed by Council to
be the chief executive and administrative officer of the City. He
enforces City ordinances and policies as required by the Charter.
The City Manager directs the day-to-day activities of the City government
which is comprised of seventeen departments and over 1200 employees.
Applying
for the right job
There are over 400 different job classifications in City government
in which vacancies periodically occur. Applicants can view Vacancy
Announcements weekly at Room 324, Busch Municipal Building,
or by dialing the Jobs Hotline number at 864-1606. Descriptions
of job duties and minimum qualifications for available City jobs
are posted. Applications are accepted only for currently posted
vacancies.
Where
to Apply
Applications may be obtained from and submitted to: Busch Municipal
Building, Human Resources Department, 840 Boonville, Room 324 Springfield,
MO 65802. All positions must be applied for at the Human Resources
Department unless otherwise noted.
- Applications/Resumes
must be postmarked by the application deadline.
- Only
candidates offered testing and/or interviews will receive notification
of his/her application status.
- All
Resumes should include a candidate's social security
number.
Proof of United
States Citizenship/Authorization to Work in the United States as
established by the Immigration Reform Act of 1986 is a condition
of employment.

Selection
Process
- Step One:
Individual submits application for position.
- Step Two:
Human Resources Department conducts initial screening, schedules
and administers various forms of tests.
- Tests
administered may consist of written, practical skills, physical
agility, oral interview, typing, or any other form which allows
the candidate to demonstrate his/her suitability for the position
being filled.
- Step Three:
After all tests are completed, the Human Resources Department
establishes a list of all eligible candidates and ranks them
according to final test scores. The candidates achieving the
top three scores are then submitted to the department where
the vacancy exists for further consideration.
- Step Four:
The individual selected must then undergo a reference check
and/or background investigation, which may include a polygraph
exam. The extent of this investigation will vary, depending
upon the nature and sensitivity of the position.
- Step Five:
If required, a psychological evaluation and physical examination
will be scheduled by the Human Resources Department. Pre-employment
drug testing is required for all positions.
- Step Six:
After satisfactory completion of the selection process and approval
for hire, you will be notified of the time and date to report
to work.
- Step Seven:
All candidates must complete a probationary period, normally
lasting six months, before acquiring status with the City.
