Mission
The
mission of the Department of Information Systems is to improve Springfield's City
government operations by maximizing our investment in technology. Areas
of Responsibility and Focus
The
Department of Information Systems has five areas of responsibility: The
Helpdesk responds to customer service requests in a timely manner; provides
support for equipment and software acquisition through research, recommendations,
and order tracking; installs new computer hardware and software; researches information
related to problems with hardware and software; and provides asset management
for computer hardware and software purchases. The
second area of responsibility is the administration of the Network which
includes maintaining security and data integrity; the maintenance of servers for
storage of data; ensuring the backup of data in a timely manner; and providing
access to the network by users. In addition, this area of responsibility supports
the City's e-mail system and access to the Intranet and Internet by City employees.
The third area
is focused on Telecommunications to provide support and assistance to the
users of our telephone equipment as well as maintenance and wiring services for
communication purposes. In addition, support is provided in assisting with the
acquisition of new systems. This area is also responsible for the coordination
of the City's communication activities between the City and City Utilities, AT&T, MCI/Verizon, and other service providers.
The
Database Administration/Development group is focused on the administration
and maintenance of existing systems, i.e., financial reporting, payroll, permit
system, service requests, fleet maintenance, and numerous other applications for
the various departments of the City. The group is involved with the development
and support of new applications as identified by management, users, and also the
development team. They are involved with the development of applications for the
City's Internet and Intranet site as well as e-commerce functionality. The group
also supports the document imaging efforts of City departments. The
Geographical Information Systems (GIS) area creates, supports, and maintains
GIS data layers; provides access to GIS data to all users; provides training in
the use of GIS software and data; and assists with the coordination of sharing
GIS data between the City and other governmental agencies. For
