The Public Works Department is the largest department
in Springfield's City government, encompassing seven divisions.
These divisions are:
Public Works is responsible for street design, construction
and maintenance. It has also partnered with the Missouri Department
of Transportation to implement a cooperative computerized traffic
signal system to improve Springfield's street capacity.
Through the Solid Waste Division, the department
manages solid waste and recycling efforts, operates the City landfill,
the Household Chemical Collection Center, the recycling drop-off
sites, and a Yard Waste Collection and Composting Center.
Services of the City of Springfield
Public Works Department
- Designs, builds, and maintains city streets and
sidewalks
- Annually operates and maintains 141 traffic control
signals, repairs approximately 9,000 traffic signs, and stripes
nearly 500 lane miles
- Manages solid waste disposal system, a yardwaste
recycling center, a sanitary landfill, recycling drop-off sites,
and the Household Chemical Collection Center
- Maintains public right-of-way and Hazelwood Cemetery
- Maintains 54 publicly-owned City buildings
- Coordinates snow removal on 530 lane miles of
high-priority emergency routes
- Operates two wastewater treatment plants
- Maps, cleans, and repairs nearly 950 miles of
sewer lines

Maintains municipal buildings, nearly 500 fleet vehicles, City right-of-way, and publicly-owned trees
and grounds.
The Operations Division includes these groups:
As a result of voter approval, the City of Springfield
and the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) now operate
a centralized computerized system to monitor and adjust signal
timing for improved traffic movement through major City and State
intersections.
This division maintains 45,000 traffic and street
signs. More than 9,000 of these signs are replaced annually.
More than 500 miles of City streets, including
over 500 crosswalks, are repainted annually. The division also
reviews about 1,000 citizen requests for various sign and signal
improvements annually.
The Sanitary Services Division collects and treats
wastewater generated in Springfield and Greene County. Sanitary
Services also works with local industries to maintain their compliance
with wastewater discharge regulations. Tours of the wastewater

The Engineering Division of Public Works designs
and inspects public improvements constructed in the City of Springfield,
including storm sewers, sanitary sewers, bridges, and streets.
This division is also responsible for rights-of-way and property
acquisitions for public uses, and for production and maintenance
of City maps and drawings of public improvements.
Urbanization that takes place in any growing city
can increase the amount of runoff during heavy rains and reduce
downstream water quality. Minimizing these impacts requires careful
storm water management. The Storm Water Services Division assists
the community in this regard by reviewing storm water plans for
all new development to ensure compliance with all applicable standards,
codes and laws. The Division develops and implements watershed master
plans to identify critical flood control and water quality projects
to be constructed in the future. The Division is also responsible
to ensure the City remains in compliance with federally mandated
water quality guidlines.
The Solid Waste Management Division operates the
City's Integrated Solid Waste Management System. The system consists
of the:
