Public Works-Operations includes the Street Maintenance and General Services Divisions. The Operations area is responsible for maintaining City streets, bridges, sidewalks, waterways, rights-of-way, municipal buildings and grounds, and most of the City's fleet of automobiles, trucks, and heavy equipment.

The Street Maintenance Division, which includes the Public Grounds section, maintains

  • 820 miles of City streets
  • 520 miles of sidewalk
  • 64 bridges structures
  • 15,000 trees in the urban forest
  • 1,200 acres of public Right of Way
  • 800 miles of storm sewers and waterways
  • 760 curb miles through sweeping
  • 20,000 miles of plowed and treated lanes in a typical winter

The Service Center Garage maintains:

  • More than 700 vehicles
  • More than 500 pieces of miscellaneous equipment.

Municipal Facilities maintains:

  • More than 70 buildings with nearly 600,000 square feet of space
