| Rountree
Neighborhood Rain Garden Project
The Rountree Neighborhood Rain
Garden Project in the 1100 block of S. Weller Avenue was a
partnership project between Storm Water Services, James
River Basin Partnership, and USDA Natural Resources Conservation
Service. Funding was provided by a grant from the Community
Foundation of the Ozarks Stewardship Ozarks Fund with
construction provided by the Street
Maintenance Division of Public Works.
A total of five gardens were
constructed in May 2007. Four of these gardens are located
in the right-of-way between the sidewalk and the street. Curb
cuts allow the street runoff to flow into these gardens. This
is the first rain garden project of this type in Springfield.
The fifth rain garden is located in a residential yard, designed
to catch runoff from the driveway and roof downspout. The
gardens range in depth from 6-12 inches and are intended to
drain within 72 hours after a rain event. Homeowner participation
in this demonstration project was voluntary. The homeowners
selected their plants and planted and maintain the gardens.
It is estimated that these rain gardens reduce runoff from
a 1" rainfall by 31%.
