STD testing information


If left untreated, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) can cause serious complications.

If you have been taking antibiotics, please be sure to tell your nurse BEFORE testing, as this may affect the accuracy of your test results.

Be sure to let your health care provider know if a recent sexual contact has been diagnosed with gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis or trichomoniasis.

The STD Clinic provides no-cost, confidential testing for the following sexually transmitted infections:

Please contact your health care provider to see if they offer the following tests. These tests are not offered at the health department. If you do not have a health care provider, you can contact the providers listed below.

Pelvic exams are performed when testing for vaginal or cervical infections. In order for us to obtain adequate vaginal/cervical specimens, it is important that you --

You should be off antibiotics for about three weeks before coming in to be tested.

Do not urinate for at least two hours before being tested. Urinating too soon before testing for gonorrhea and chlamydia can make your tests inaccurate.

You can urinate before being seen if you are only getting blood tests for HIV and syphilis or if you are coming in for treatment only.

If you are unsure exactly what you will need, it is advisable that you do not urinate.
