Air Quality

Air Quality works to protect people and the environment from the effects of pollution. The air in Springfield meets federal air quality standards; however, the growing number of people businesses and industry all combine with our climate and topography to create the potential for air pollution problems.

We promote and protect public health by enforcing local ordinances. We work with businesses inside Springfield city limits to control emissions of air contaminants in order to maintain state and federal standards. Emissions may come from large industrial plants or from the corner dry cleaning business.

Air Quality Staff

• Brian Adams, Air Quality Control Coordinator

  Brian has been with the Springfield Air Quality Control program since 1984. Previously he worked for the St. Louis County Air Pollution Control for more than three years. He graduated from the University of Missouri, Columbia in 1979 with a Bachelor of Science in Atmospheric Science. Brian's primary duties are air permitting and emissions inventory tracking and auditing. He also conducts enforcement activity such as onsite industrial inspections and regulatory compliance, citizen complaint investigations, and air monitoring quality assurance duties.

  Ramona has a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry with an emphasis in Environmental Chemistry and a math minor. She has been employed as a senior technician and an analytical chemist in manufacturing and research laboratories. Ramona has been an air quality control specialist with the Springfield-Greene County Health Department since 2003. She is passionate about her work and is dedicated to providing accurate data regarding the quality of the air the citizens of Greene County breathe every day.

  Orel has an Associate degree in Electronics and Computer Technology. He has more than 26 years of experience in the field of Air Quality Monitoring.
• Clay Dodson, Air Quality Specialist

  Clay Dodson was raised in Fair Grove, Missouri and received his undergraduate degree in chemistry from Southwest Missouri State University (now Missouri State University) in 2005. After a year working for a Springfield area water quality laboratory, he enrolled in the Environmental Science Master Degree Program at the University of Idaho. Upon completion of his masters he accepted a position with an environmental consulting and engineering firm in Portland Oregon. Clay soon decided to look for employment closer to his family and is delighted be back in the Ozarks and to be working as an Air Quality Specialist for the City of Springfield.

  Jim Houlihan has lived and worked in Southwest Missouri since 1977. Jim has a BS in Management Technology with an emphasis in Environmental Health from Missouri Southern State University. Jim's professional experience includes five years with Missouri Department of Natural Resources and seven years with the US Army, Medical Service Corps, as an Environmental Science Officer including fourteen months in Iraq.
