Air Quality Control

Program Overview

Air Quality Control works to protect people and the environment from the effects of pollution. The air in Springfield meets the federal air quality standards, however, the growing number of people businesses and industry all combine with our climate and topography to create the potential for air pollution problems.

The Air Quality Control staff promote and protect public health by enforcing local ordinances. They work with businesses inside Springfield city limits to control emissions of air contaminants in order to maintain state and federal standards. Emissions may come from large industrial plants or from the corner dry cleaning business.

Additional Services

Air Quality Control staff also performs the following tasks:

  • Evaluate emission control measures that may be needed to protect and improve air quality.
  • Review new commercial and industrial projects and develop strategies to minimize their air quality impact.
  • Evaluate plans and issue permits for any new project that involves installing, altering or operating equipment that either causes or controls air pollution.
  • Work with permit applicants to minimize air pollution and ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations.
  • Periodically inspect facilities to ensure compliance with permit requirements.
  • Provide training to help business owners understand requirements.
  • Investigate nuisance, smoke and odor complaints.
  • Conduct inspections of asbestos removal projects.
  • Conduct air quality monitoring at four area stations.
