In 1972 J.D. received a Bachelor's of Science degree in Biology frm Southwest Missouri State University (SMSU). The following two years he spent in the West Indies as a freelance photographer. Upon returning to the United States, J.D. worked as a teaching assistant at SMSU while doing post graduate work.

J.D. worked for 19 years in the water and waste water fields for the City of Springfield's Public Works Department before transferring to the health department as a Health Investigator.

He also worked (during summer vacations) as an instructor for the American Wilderness Outdoor Leadership School (Safari Club International) just outside of Jackson Hole, Wyoming. There he taught courses in photography, archery, shotgunning, flyfishing and backpacking.

J.D. has been involved with Ozarks Greenways for many years and is currently on his second term as a member of the board of directors. He is also a member of the Greene County Environmental Advisory Board.
