Pandemic Planning - Faith-Based Organizations

In June of this year, the H1N1 influenza virus was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization after several thousands of cases were reported throughout the world. As this pandemic continues to spread, there are several considerations that can help protect you and your community. The Springfield-Greene County Health Department along with our partners seeks to ensure that you have the information necessary to protect people and foster a healthy environment.

In order to provide the best possible protection for yourself, your family, your congregation and your neighbors, a vaccination is recommended. The H1N1 vaccination is safe and effective. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have decided to ship smaller amounts as they become available. These limited numbers will be available to those at highest risk for infection including children, young adults age 19-24, pregnant women, people age 25-64 with chronic health conditions as well as those that live with or care for a child 6 months of age or younger. These categories of people differ from the seasonal flu high risk categories.

Because Greene County is receiving small shipments of vaccine, we ask that our community remains patient as work is done to ensure the vaccine can be administered as safely and efficiently as possible to those who need it most right now. Everyone will be given a chance to be vaccinated if they choose, but it may take some time. The best way to find out about availability of the H1N1 vaccine is to contact your health care provider. Information on the availability of vaccine will also be publicized at www.springfieldmo.gov/health and updated regularly on the automated public health information line at 864-1166.
