Ordinance Enforcement

The environmental compliance office is responsible for enforcement of environmental ordinances in Springfield and Greene County, along with other services.

The environmental compliance office:

  • Inspects hotels and motels, including any facility with five or more nightly room rentals. Inspections are conducted at least annually for Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) licensure. Inspectors look at sanitation, fire safety and environmental issues.
  • Inspects public swimming pools and spas at municipal pools and lodging facilities. Inspectors look for water quality, water clarity, safety equipment and environmental and safety concerns.
  • Investigates environmental complaints including complaints on insects, rodents, weeds, trash and inoperable vehicles. Complaints on trash, weeds or inoperable vehicles in the unincorporated areas of Greene County are referred to Greene County Planning and Zoning.
  • Investigates communicable disease in conjunction with epidemiology staff
  • Inspects dwelling units on a complaint basis only to determine compliance with minimal housing standards
  • Inspects trash trucks annually as a requirement for owners to obtain a business license in the City of Springfield
  • Inspects non-emergency transport vehicles for compliance
  • Works with partners on starling control (what does a starling sound like?)
  • Evaluates water and septic systems for regulated facilities
  • Investigates sewage complaints
