Rabies and Animal Bites

Rabies Vaccination

In Springfield...

Any dog, cat, or ferret kept by a person within the City of Springfield must be vaccinated for rabies by a veterinarian licensed by the State of Missouri. Dogs must have the vaccination tag displayed. Cat and ferret owners or caregivers must have a copy of the vaccination certification on hand at all times.

In Greene County...

Any dog owned or cared for must be vaccinated for rabies. The animal must display a current registration-vaccination tag issued by a veterinarian.

Animal Bites

We verify animal bites and quarantine the responsible animal for 10 days from the date of the bite. Animals must be held at a licensed veterinary facility or at the Springfield Animal Shelter.

During the quarantine, we observe the animal for symptoms of illness. After 10 days, if the animal is healthy, it can be reunited with its owner. Owners are required to pay appropriate fees for boarding or vaccination.
