Environmental Compliance - Sewage
Staff observe well construction for cap or seal and well head protection. Obvious sources for potential contamination are rated, such as distance from septic tanks, old abandoned wells, barn lots, etc.
Water samples are collected for bacteria and nitrate nitrogen analysis.
Septic tank and lateral field are located. Surfacing effluent in the area of the lateral field as well as grey water discharges are sought.
Staff also follow up on sewage system complaints to determine if they are public or private. Private issues are addressed with home or business owners. Violation notices are sent to the property owner of record after a complaint is verified. Public sewage issues are forwarded to the City of Springfield's Public Works Department for correction, or to other appropriate jurisdictions.
In addition, staff work with Greene County Resource Management's environmental staff to abate sewage complaints in the county. Greene County Resource Management issues sewage permits and does inspections on repairs and new private waste water treatment systems.
