Tobacco Enforcement
Program Overview Tobacco Sales Smokefree Dining Staff Office Hours
Program Overview . . .
The Tobacco Enforcement program seeks to protect public health by reducing exposure to tobacco and second-hand smoke and enforcing bans on the sale of tobacco to minors.
Tobacco Sales . . .
According to City of Springfield ordinance, tobacco sales to minors are prohibited. Businesses that do not comply may be ticketed.
Health department staff are committed to work diligently with business owners to help them understand current applicable city ordinances. Business owners who would like a consultation visit, or staff training and education may call (417) 864-1623.

Smokefree Dining . . .
In 2003 Springfield City Council approved an ordinance restricting smoking in dining establishments. Businesses were given a grace period in which to
change policy, apply for an exemption or make facility changes.
The health department enforcement staff regularly visits dining establishments to evaluate their compliance with the ordinance. In addition, staff follow up on
complaints from the general public.
To lodge a complaint regarding a dining establishment not in compliance with Springfield's smokefree dining ordinance, please call (417) 864-1623.

The tobacco program operated by the Springfield-Greene County Health Department is a valued partner as I work to reduce
the harmful effects of tobacco use and exposure, both as Project Coordinator for the Ozarks Public Health Institute at SMSU and as a member of breathe easy Springfield.
Dane regularly contacts new restaurants in Springfield to inform them of the current clean indoor law and issues exemptions when appropriate. I use this information to update our Smokefree
Dining Guide both in hard copy and on our website.
He also serves as the "tobacco compliance investigator" for handling citizen complaints about smoking in places where it is not lawful.
In addition, Springfield has a high compliance rate among retailers, primarily due to the proactice, informative approach taken in this program.
