Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Program

Program Overview

Women, Infants, and Children Nutrition Education and Supplemental Food Program (WIC) serves to safeguard the health of eligible women, infants and children up to age 5 who are at nutritional risk. WIC is designed to improve the nutritional health of pregnant women, breastfeeding moms, infants and children with the goal of improving the overall health of families.

While the WIC program does not specifically serve dads or other male caregivers, they are always welcome to attend classes and ask questions.

WIC also provides vouchers to purchase nutritious supplemental foods like milk, eggs, cheese, fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grain breads, cereal, peanut butter and beans at several local businesses. A major update to the WIC food package was made October 1, 2009 adding more variety to better meet the nutritional needs of today's clients.

Eligibility

WIC is open to individuals who meet income guidelines and are determined by health professionals to be at nutritional risk. The unborn child is counted as a member of the family when eligibility is determined. Income guidelines are based on 185 percent of poverty level.
