Have an interest working in Public Safety for the City of Springfield?  Great!  You’ve come to the right place…

Public Safety positions such as Firefighters and Police Officers are extremely physically demanding positions that require all around good physical conditioning.  For a qualified individual to be considered for these positions they must first be able to pass the written examination to move on to the Physical Agility Test which tests an individual on physical tasks required to perform the job.

Police Officers...

  • must be able to run, climb, jump, lift/carry, drag, push, and use of force.
  • For over 75 percent of police apprehensions, the amount of resistance given by the suspect is described as moderate or strong, and the average amount of time it takes to subdue a subject can vary between 30 seconds and two minutes (9lbid.,4.).

Did you know?

Firefighters...

  • have the highest short-surge physiologic demands of any occupation.
  • Strenuous job tasks include:
    • carrying gear up stairs;
    • advancing charged hoses;
    • using pike poles and axes to break through doors, walls, and ceilings;
    • raising ladders;
    • rescuing victims; and
    • hoisting equipment.

The Springfield-Greene County Park Board has specifically designed and programmed a class to prepare individuals for the City of Springfield Firefighter and Police Officer Physical Agility Test (PAT).

Tyler O’Banion, CSCS - Strength & Conditioning Specialist – National Strength & Conditioning Association

  • 9 Years experience includes:
    • Collegiate level athlete preparation (MSU Strength & Conditioning Staff; Drury Women’s Athletics)
    • Fitness Center Management, health assessments and programming.

Jordan Kirbey ACSM-HFS

  • Health Fitness Specialist – American College of Sports Medicine

The Physical Agility Test (PAT) Training class.....

  • is a specialty preparatory class designed specifically for Public Safety positions;
  • offers unparalleled quality of coaching, teaching, instructing through
    • sports medicine expertise, as well as experienced strength & conditioning staff;
    • the vast experience of related disciplines that provides a participant with a major advantage during training, as well as provides the participant with valuable, practical information that will be advantageous to them in their professional careers;
  • offers program preparation based on test requirement, academy requirements, bio-dynamic structure of testing protocol, energy demand of test protocol;
  • is designed, in conjunction with the Human Resources Department and Springfield Fire and Police Departments, to capture all aspects of the preparation process.

This program is vastly different than a boot camp or other GENERAL activity classes due to the professional level of the program content and management. Specific programming structure is utilized since there are specific purposes, prep timeline, focus, end result, etc. 

Participants will recognize the exclusive nature of the program as being one that will provide a better path and is consistent with the goals and directives of the Police and Fire Departments and City of Springfield.
