NOTICE OF PROMOTIONAL EXAMINATION
This announcement applies to persons who are receiving pay as regular City employees within the Fire Department.
FIRE EQUIPMENT OPERATOR
Date: August 7, 2013
Place: Fire Training Center-2620 W. Battlefield
Time: 9:00-11:00 A.M.
Date: August 19-23
Operational: Old Station 6
Driving: AIRPORT –Report to Station #5
Dates & Times of practical portions will be assigned to candidates individually.
*Must arrive 15 minutes prior to all scheduled testing times.
All interested candidates must submit an application to the Human Resources Department, Room 324 Busch Building by FAX, in person, or apply on line at www.springfieldmo.gov no later than 5:00 p.m. Friday, August 2, 2013.
Written Examination (50% of overall score)
The written test will be given prior to the practical examination. The written test will have a total value of 100 points possible with a minimum passing score of 70% of total points possible.
The written test is of the multiple-choice variety. Questions in the written examination are predominantly covered by but not limited to the following manuals or documents:
- Springfield Fire Department Standard Operating Guidelines.
- Springfield Fire Department Policies and Procedures.
- Pumping Apparatus Driver/Operator Handbook, IFSTA, 2nd ed.
- Aerial Apparatus Driver/Operator Handbook, IFSTA, 2nd ed.
- Hose Practices, IFSTA, 7th ed.
- Fire and Emergency Services Company Officer, IFSTA, 4th ed.
- Fire Department Safety Officer, IFSTA, 1st ed.
All candidates shall pass the written examination before proceeding to the practical examination.
Candidates have five (5) business days after examination results are received to review the examination per Merit Rule 5.12. You must contact Human Resources Department for an appointment.
Practical Examination – (50% of the overall score) All candidates will complete the entire practical examination. No scores will be given during this portion of the test. Each evolution is equally weighted. The cumulative score of each phase is totaled, resulting in the practical examination score.
Operational Skills phase: This phase involves pumping and ladder operations, and is worth 50% of the practical examination. Each evolution is equally weighted.
- Pumping evolution: this will be a drafting evolution with an engine company.
- Ladder evolution: this would involve the proper set up and use of an aerial ladder.
Driving Evolution phase: This phase involves driving an engine and a ladder apparatus. Combined, this is worth 50% of the practical examination. Each evolution is equally weighted.
- Engine driving evolution: this will involve the driving of the VFIS competency course in an engine company.
- Ladder driving evolution: this will involve the driving of the VFIS competency course in an aerial apparatus.
Length of Service:
Seniority will be added upon completion of all phases of testing to those applicant’s scores who have successfully reached the minimum passing on each phase of the selection process (Written – minimum passing score of 70% and Practical – minimum passing score of 70% on each phase). Seniority will be figured at one-half (.5) point per year with no maximum and shall be added to the total number of points for the Final Score only after all testing is completed on each phase.
All persons meeting the minimum requirements of each phase of testing will be placed on the eligibility list.

NOTE: The last service rating received must have been satisfactory per Merit Rule 10.1 (c). The eligible list established by this examination shall expire six (6) months from the date established or when exhausted unless extended per Merit Rule 6.4(a).
