Arts & Entertainment Ideas

  • Provide an outdoor "sit-in" theater utilizing a drive-in style format for viewing art films or classic films in the summer. A white flat building side with electricity for projection and tiered seating (either bring a blanket, chair, or sit on the grass).
  • Art that can be touched or climbed on and manipulated, as well as appreciated for its beauty.
  • To feel historically connected with the past, and observe art that leaves me hopeful for the future.
  • A statue of a child or children in different areas representing a specific emotion: anger, fear, joy, contentment, etc. (This could also be a prime opportunity to represent children of different cultures.) We could tie in our own history, where the telling of a story would further develop the emotion. These areas should create a degree of tension, where someone could be moved to tears.
  • Avoid "artsyfartsy" public art. Get some artists with appealing ideas that will draw people, not bewilder them.
  • The Jordan Creek Theatre Company proposes that they be located within the new Civic Park, housed in their own facility. This could be a newly constructed theater building or a renovation (possibly very minimal renovation) of an existing industrial or warehouse structure in the Civic Park. Their vision is of a 200-299 seat theater which would require 10-15,000 square foot of space. This would include the auditorium space, scene shop, rehearsal space, and front-of-house space (i.e. box office, lobby). Goals this theater seeks to achieve: Helping to create another venue of "night life" in the new Civic Park; Building a strong, marketable "theater district"; Producing works of local historical significance to the area; Complimenting the work of existing theaters in the area
  • A beautiful sculpture garden in Santa Fe, N.M - astounded by the beauty, form, name and designation of this spectacular sculpture entitled "The Park," by sculptor Glenna Goodacre. (Add also found in Landscape Architecture Magazine 10 & 11 1998) Use as the most succinct, spectacular entrance to our park that could ever be devised.
  • Let's get the community excited by having donors and artisans team up, create a fountain or sculpture of art work to submit to Development Committee, and allow the citizens to participate in "donating" as in a memorial or honorarium.
  • Springfield is lacking a venue for 2,000 - 5,000 people. Indoor or outdoor for music concerts, large convention meetings or other arts related shows. More relaxed than Juanita K. Hall, and larger.
  • Use the visual arts to unify the park in terms of design. All signage and logos, e.g., should have the same look to ensure a cohesive sense of place.
  • Art should be dynamic, engaging, and three-dimensional - encouraging exploration.
  • Some art should passively generate sound such as a giant wind chime, or a field of wheat fashioned in metal that sings as the wind pushes through it. The sound adds personality to the park.
