- About six years ago, the City of Colleyville, Texas, (near Dallas-Fort
Worth) constructed a kids park in their vacant area. There is a company
that will send all necessary equipment from the east. The city gets
together and makes a plan of what we need in the way of slides, swings,
gazebo, bandstand, stage area and all other equipment to make everyone
happy. This company takes all the plans, ships all materials out to
us. Our job will be to have everyone volunteer to install the entire
park equipment in one day. In Texas, it was announced on radio, television,
and newspaper that everyone show up on a particular day and work until
it is finished. This is a wonderful idea for everyone in Springfield
to get involved.
- I remember as a child riding my bike to a large local park in California.
Near the playground was an actual WWII airplane that we could climb
on and through along with a eight foot "Tiki" statue (Indian
carved sculpture with many faces). Adjacent at one end of the park was
a branch library and at the other end was an expansive flat grassy area
with a building where the park board stored numerous balls or other
play equipment for temporary 'checkout'. This park was very inviting
and I recall spending many, many pleasant hours there.
- A 'play' space that invites interaction with the park. This would
include colorful and multi-level playground equipment for children (along
with soft ground for romping), a wide flat area for sports/kite flying,
a bike/walking path for exercise, water / flowers / windchimes that
stimulate the senses, and an emphasis on art that takes the form of
sculpture (big ones you can climb on, my daughter injects).
- Build a Community Media Center providing training in radio,
television and information technology, access to all the equipment necessary
to produce media, and multi-media transmission options including cable
television, broadcast radio and the Internet.
- Satellite Zoo Exhibit This could serve both as a changing-exhibit
in the park and an advertisement to visit nearby Dickerson Park Zoo.
