Where Do Our Recyclables Go?

The City of Springfield has competitively bid contracts in place with several local recycling businesses.

Mixed Paper goes to Nestle Purina PetCare in Springfield. This contract has resulted in 30 new jobs; the construction of a new $3 million/30,000 square foot manufacturing facility; and approximately $2.5 million returned to our community annually in payroll and locally purchased goods and services. The mixed paper is recycled on site into animal bedding and pet litter products –Yesterday’s News and Second Nature litters, for example, which are sold throughout the US.

Cardboard goes to New American Recycling, here in Springfield. It is processed here and marketed to companies that manufacture it into more cardboard or boxboard (cereal box material) containers or similar packing materials.

Plastics go to New American Recycling, here in Springfield. They are processed here and marketed to companies that manufacture it into a variety of products, including carpet, clothing, composite decking and other building materials and consumer products.

Tin/Steel goes to Commercial Metals, here in Springfield, where it is processed and marketed to companies that recycle it into more aluminum and steel products.

Glass goes to Ripple Glass in Kansas City where it is processed and sold to Owens-Corning and is used to make “pink panther” fiberglass construction insulation. Some of the glass is also recycled into new bottle beverage containers. The City has recently received our first donation of fiberglass insulation for our local Habitat for Humanity chapter as a bonus for the amount of glass we have recycled with Ripple.

Funding

Springfield's voter approved Integrated Solid Waste Management System (ISWMS) is funded by revenues generated from tipping fees at the City's Sanitary Landfill as well as several revenue sources, including the sale of yardwaste compost and mulch products, grants, honor system fees, and donations.
