ArtsFiesta!

A huge "Thank You!" to everyone who celebrated Mexican culture by enjoying Springfield's first visit by "Mariachi Femenil Nuevo Tecalitlan," an all-female mariachi band with guest Felipe Villalobos.
These university-trained musicians are ambassadors of Mexican culture and have performed at international Mexican music festivals. Springfield's "JRB Band" will travel to Tlaquepaque in February 2010 as a return cultural exchange.

14th Annual Japanese Fall Festival

Taiko Drums, featuring Osuwa Taiko !
Newly added musical pieces, plus dancing,
singing and other instrumentation

St. Louis Osuwa Taiko energized the crowds at the Japanese Fall Festival in Springfield, MO last weekend. After performances, the group was mobbed by kids who got a 15-minute drum lesson on stage. You can find more about the St. Louis Osuwa Taiko group on their website where they list upcoming performances, classes, and a contact form to request a performance.

Visitors were able to unwind at the end of the day by strolling through the beautiful candlelit garden.  Hundreds of candles, torches and lanterns were lit the along paths and lakes of this authentic Japanese garden.

Candy Miyuki - Candy sculptress!

The only woman ever to become a professional performer of "amezaiku," the 400-year old Japanese art of candy-making, Candy Miuki continues the craft of creating irresistibly delicious delicate cherry blossoms, elegant cranes, fierce dragons, and playful monkeys.
Candy-as-sculpture originated in 17th century Japan as a form of street entertainment. Today, Candy Miyuki has turned this street craft into fine art, and has performed at Disney's Epcot Center in Orlando, on the Rosie O'Donnell show, and at festivals around the world.

This year, Candy Miyuki entertained crowds by making candy sculpture animals and portraits. Their colorful and intricate designs remind us of Venetian glass art, and though you want to treasure them forever, they are fantastically tasty!
