Photo Red Light Enforcement

We are trying to reduce the number of red light runners by increasing enforcement of signalized intersections. As indicated in previous tips, running red lights is still a dangerous situation in Springfield. We have come a long way in trying to prevent crashes by being mindful of the three “E’s.” This stands for Education, Engineering, and Enforcement.

  • Education is one of the key elements to traffic safety. Graduated driver’s licenses and driver’s education help educate drivers on ways to reduce their chances of being in a crash.
  • Engineering is another aspect of traffic safety. Springfield traffic engineers are constantly looking at traffic volumes and patterns in an effort to reduce the number of crashes. They review all crashes that occur to see what caused the crash. In some instances, a change in the design of the intersection or in the signs can eliminate some crashes.
  • Enforcement is the last element in a successful traffic safety plan. The “Respect Red” campaign was designed to raise public awareness of red light runners. This campaign sent the message that we had a problem that needed to be addressed. Signage was posted and municipal fines increased to get the drivers' attention.
Another “tool” that will be used in late January or early February 2007 is photo red light enforcement. We will be placing these photo red light cameras at eight to sixteen locations at intersections that have a high number of right angle crashes. There will be additional signage placed around these locations to raise public awareness of the cameras.

A violation of a red signal light involving the photo red light cameras is a civil penalty and not a criminal offense. It’s a $100.00 fine and no points against a driver’s license. The summons will be sent to the registered owner of the vehicle. With the increase in enforcement, we hope to have a reduction in crashes at these intersections.
