For the affected and concerned
I want to:
- Learn how to identify signs of hoarding or severe squalor.
- Find local assistance for myself or someone I know who struggles with hoarding.
- Know what I should or should not to do to help a hoarder.
- Visit other web sites for help with getting organized and improving safety in the home by decluttering.
The Issue of Hoarding
In recent years, firefighters have seen an alarming increase in safety issues related to compulsive hoarding and severe squalor. The excessive accumulation of materials in homes poses a significant threat to both those who live in the home and others who may enter the home, including firefighters.
The Safe and Sanitary Homes Collaborative was formed to address this serious issue. Comprised of numerous representatives from agencies and organizations who deal with hoarding and squalor on a regular basis, it is the mission of the Collaborative to ensure the health and safety of all citizens and first responders by educating and empowering our community to address and alleviate hoarding and unsanitary living conditions.
Through identification, education, mitigation and follow-up, it is the goal of the Safe and Sanitary Homes Collaborative that every Springfield citizen live in a safe and sanitary home.
