No suspects sought in CoxHealth shooting
At approximately 9:18 p.m. on Saturday, November 30th, Springfield Police responded to the 9th floor of Cox Hospital at 3801 S. National Avenue after receiving reports of shots fired at that location. When police arrived, they learned that Booker Cox Jr., and his wife, Carolyn Cox, had both been shot and were receiving treatment for their injuries. At 10:09p.m., Booker Cox Jr. was pronounced dead. Carolyn Cox continues to receive treatment for her injuries.
An autopsy was conducted today, and preliminary results indicate that Booker Cox Jr. died as a result of the gunshot wound. A final determination of the cause and manner of death will be made by the Medical Examiner's Office at a later time.
Initial indications from the follow-up investigation are that Booker Cox Jr.'s wound was self-inflicted. The full circumstances of Carolyn Cox's shooting have not yet been determined. The investigation will continue until a final determination is made. More specific details of the investigation will not be released at this time.
Based on this information, no suspects are being sought, there is no indication that others were involved in this incident, and there is no threat or danger to others in the community.
