Free Kids Fishing Fun Day Saturday, June 7 at new location

The Springfield-Greene County Park Board and the Missouri Department of Conservation host the 33rd Annual Kids Fishing Fun Day, Saturday, June 7, at a new location: Rutledge-Wilson Farm Park, 3825 W. Farm Road 146, Springfield.

This free event is designed to teach kids how to fish and encourage them to put their new skills to work throughout the summer. The Rutledge-Wilson Farm Park pond will be fully stocked with channel catfish and hybrid sunfish, and each child may catch and keep up to three fish. MDC staff will clean one fish per child, and teach kids how to clean their other fish.

Kids age 3-13 may register to fish at one of the following times: 8, 9:15, 10:30 or 11:45 a.m. All children must be accompanied by an adult, and must supply their own rod and reel, bait and stringer for the fish. Space is limited and sessions may fill up, so register early.

Kids Fishing Fun Day activities include:

Participants will also go home with simple recipes for frying, baking or grilling their catch, as well as more information about MDC Free Fishing Weekend, June 7-8, when Missourians throughout the state may fish without a license.

In case of rain, Kids Fishing Fun Day will be rescheduled for the following day, Sunday, June 8, same time and location.

This event is free but space is limited, and registration is required. Register at parkboard.org (by Thurs, May 29, 5 p.m.) or call 417-864-1049. Limited registration is also available on-site the morning of the event, for sessions that may still have space.
