For Immediate Release

Kimbrough Avenue Closure for Repair

Kimbrough Avenue will be closed at McDaniel Street in downtown Springfield beginning after morning rush hour on Friday, Jan. 23, 2009, to continue repair work resulting from the collapse in that section of the street last week.

The closure may last up to 30 days. That section of the street houses a large underground utility infrastructure for AT&T, and the company will inspect its lines and make necessary repairs during this closure period.

Access to businesses located on each side of the intersection will be maintained throughout the closure, as well as pedestrian and bicycle access.

Thru-traffic motorists on northbound Kimbrough will be detoured east on Walnut Street, north on John Q. Hammons Parkway to St. Louis Street, then  west on St. Louis Street to Kimbrough. Southbound motorists will be detoured west on St. Louis to Jefferson Avenue, then south on Jefferson to Walnut, then east on Walnut back to Kimbrough.

The road was closed  on Jan. 13 with the discovery of a large hole in the street and re-opened to traffic on Jan. 14, following a temporary repair to the underground water line and the road surface. The City hopes to  complete the permanent repair to the road surface during this closure period, weather permitting.
