Fire Department Honors Life-saving Firefighters

On March 12, the Springfield Fire Department held an awards ceremony to honor fire fighters who saved lives during 2008. The honorees received the Medical Life Saves, Fire Life Saves, Water Rescue Life Saves, and Distinguished Unit awards. Emergency response by the Springfield Fire Department resulted in 18 life saves last year.

Matt Paxton, a UPS employee was recognized with a Citizen Life Save. Paxton heard the cries of an individual trapped under a truck wheel and assisted the patient until fire crews arrived.

Firefighter Matt Lyon is the 2008 Springfield Fire Department Firefighter of the Year, and Captain Paul Tyler is the 2008 Springfield Fire Department Fire Officer of the Year.

City Manager Greg Burris and 100 Club Board Member John Rush offered words of encouragement and thanks for the services provided by the Fire Department as part of the opening comments.
