News Release

For Immediate Release

National Avenue Closure March 21-25

National Avenue will be closed just south of Grand Street beginning at 12:01 a.m., Saturday, March 21, 2009, to allow for underground utility improvements. The street will re-open at 6 a.m. on Wednesday, March 25, 2009, weather permitting. The marked detour will be via Grand Street, Fremont Avenue and Bennett Street.

During this time, Grand Street will not be obstructed. Drivers will still be able to access northbound National when traveling in both directions on Grand, and drivers traveling south on National will be able to access both directions of Grand. The work is being done at this time because Missouri State University will be on spring break beginning Saturday, March 21. Springfield Public Schools also are on spring break at this time.

The utility work is being done in advance of more extensive improvements at Grand and National that will add more left and right turn lanes and greater capacity to the intersection, which carries approximately 50,000 vehicles per day. Improvements to the intersection as a whole will begin this summer. The upgrade will be funded by the ¼-cent Sales Tax for Capital Improvements.
