For Immediate Release
Zone 3 Council Selection Process Begins
The City Council heard its first round of presentations from applicants interested in being appointed to the open Zone 3 Council seat.
The applicants spoke for about five minutes each in an order determined by a random lottery. They were:
- Chris Bell, hospital customer-care supervisor
- Jerry Compton, architect
- Carl Herd, retired schoolteacher
- Mike Schilling, college journalism/government instructor
- Perry Elkins, self-employed mediator
- Brian Johnson, field engineer
- Dan Scott, architect
- Jeremy Cady, web/graphic manager
- Frank Howey, entrepreneur
A 10th applicant, John Sellars, withdrew his application, citing a potential conflict of interest related to his employment at the History Museum for Springfield-Greene County.
Today’s presentations will air on the City’s government access channel, Mediacom Channel 23, at 8:30 p.m. tonight; 3 p.m. Friday, May 1; and 4:30 p.m., Saturday, May 2. It is expected to be posted on the City Web site later today at tv23.springfieldmo.gov.
Mayor Jim O’Neal asked the current eight City Councilmembers to submit their top four choices for the Zone 3 position to the City Clerk by noon, Friday, May 1. The three applicants with the most support will be invited back for a second interview with the Council on Monday, May 4. The Mayor also asked Councilmembers to submit questions they would like to ask the top candidates.
The Council will open its regularly scheduled meeting an hour earlier, at 6 p.m., Monday, May 4, in Council Chambers. Mayor O’Neal said he would guide the interview process using a compilation of the questions submitted by the Council. Two candidates will be sequestered while one candidate is being interviewed.
Monday’s interviews will air live on TV23 and on the City Web site at: tv23.springfieldmo.gov, along with the regular Council agenda that will begin after the Zone 3 selection concludes.
Mayor O’Neal said he intends to ask the Council to vote on the new Zone 3 Councilmember at Monday’s meeting. The vote requires a five-member majority. If there is not a majority on the first round of voting, the applicant with the lowest number of votes will be removed from consideration and another vote will be taken on the remaining two applicants.
The complete candidate applications and supporting material is available on the City Web site at: www.springfieldmo.gov/cityconnect.
