WIC Participants Enjoy New, Expanded Space

In its first two days inside the brand new Jordan Valley Community Health Center at 440 E Tampa, the Springfield-Greene County Health Department’s WIC program served 250 families – all thrilled with the new facility.

Clients said, “The computers in the kids area are nifty, and the kids area is great,” and “It’s uptown!”

The new 6000+ square foot space WIC occupies inside the JVCHC building includes 10 consultation rooms, three classrooms, a cooking demonstration kitchen, a lactation center, a children’s learning center with library books and computers, a spacious lobby and offices for WIC staff, Parents as Teachers and Springfield-Greene County Library staff.

“The new facility was so needed, and so long in coming.  It is client centered – a much better experience for our WIC participants,” says assistant director of health Clay Goddard.  “When I looked into the children’s learning center Tuesday and saw a little boy at the computer talking to Sponge Bob™, it just made me smile all over!”

Weekly activities at the new WIC facility will include a children’s story hour, Itsy Bitsy Yoga for infants, prenatal Yoga, education and nutrition classes and individual appointments with WIC staff and Parents as Teachers.

“Our program continues to grow, as the economy spirals downward,” says WIC coordinator Mary Ellison.  “We believe that moving to this new facility will allow us to serve even more people.  Our partnership with the Jordan Valley Community Health Center allows our participants the opportunity to also receive medical, dental, pharmacy and mental health services at a single location, in a beautiful, spacious facility that is truly a pleasure to visit.”
