For Immediate Release
Grant Avenue Resurfacing Begins July 20
On Monday, July 20, a contractor working for the City of Springfield will begin applying a new micro-seal surface to Grant Avenue from Grand Street to Olive Street.
Following placement of the micro-seal, City crews will apply new pavement markings, which will result in three lanes for traffic (one through lane in each direction with a center left-turn lane) on Grant Avenue from a point south of Grand Street to Chestnut Expressway. The three-lane configuration in this area will match the existing three-lane configuration on Grant Avenue south of Grand Street and north of Chestnut Expressway.
Having a dedicated left-turn lane at each of the traffic signals in the area (at Mount Vernon Street, Walnut Street, and College Street) will relieve bottlenecks created by vehicles stopping in a through traffic lane to turn left, thus reducing the potential for rear-end crashes. Following completion of the work, left turns will be permitted at all times of the day on Grant Avenue at College Street where left turns are currently prohibited between 4 and 6 p.m. on weekdays. The new markings will result in wider lanes with space for bicycles to “share the lane” in the north-south through lanes.
All of the traffic lane changes will be accomplished within the width of the existing street without any reconstruction.
Motorists are requested to use caution with traveling around the work crews and exercise patience in learning the new traffic lane patterns.
