For Immediate Release
Park Central Square Closure Wednesday Aug. 12
The City of Springfield Public Works Department will close Park Central Square in its entirety beginning at 7 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2009, for continuing road improvement work.
Throughout the process of improving the outer portion of the Square, which includes the surrounding street and sidewalks, the City has kept at least one quadrant of the Square open to traffic at all times. Currently, the contractor’s crews on the Square are ready to move onto working on the north and west quadrants, as the southeast quadrant is now completed and ready to be opened.
However, due to the City Utilities water main work still in progress on Jefferson Avenue between St. Louis Street and Olive Street, Park Central East cannot be opened, as traffic would not be able to move through the north “spoke” of the Square onto Boonville Avenue, nor onto Park Central East and then Jefferson Avenue. Robberson Alley is used as a pedestrian walkway and service alley, and is often blocked by large service trucks.
Therefore, in order to keep the project moving ahead and to get the north outlet from the Square open sooner, the full closure will begin Wednesday. This will allow the contractor to remove and replace the concrete intersection at Boonville Avenue’s intersection with the Square. This work is expected to take no longer than five days, and by Monday evening — weather permitting — the east half of the Square can be opened for north bound traffic.
All sidewalks surrounding Park Central Square will remain open throughout the construction process.
As soon as the water main project on Jefferson Avenue is fully completed, Park Central East will be re-opened to two-way traffic, providing more access to the Square.
Park Central West and the adjacent portion of the outer Square are the final sections of pavement to be replaced. The Public Works Department still expects the entire driving surface to be completed within the next three weeks.
“We realize this is an inconvenience for businesses and visitors on the Square, and we appreciate the public’s patience,” said Phil Broyles, Public Works Assistant Director. “Moving forward with the improvements on the north side right now means the entire project will be completed sooner, and the entire Square will be open sooner.”
