City Offers New Option for Black Walnuts

With conditions right for a bumper crop of black walnuts this year, the City is offering a new option for “recycling” black walnuts.

The Lone Pine Recycling Center, 3020 S. Lone Pine Ave., will be accepting black walnuts today through Oct. 31, 2009. The City will take the black walnuts to Hammons Products and put proceeds received for them back into the recycling fund.

The Lone Pine Recycling Center is open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday-Saturday. For more information on recycling programs, call the Recycling Hotline at 864-1904 or visit: www.springfieldmo.gov/recycling.

Citizens also can earn some extra money by selling the black walnuts themselves to Hammons Products, which is setting up a hulling station at the Ozark Empire Fairgrounds beginning today.

Hammons Products will accept black walnuts at the Ozark Empire Fairgrounds from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday today through Oct. 31. They are currently paying $9 per 100-pounds, after they are hulled. For more information, visit: www.black-walnuts.com or call 1-888-429-6887.

For more information contact: Barbara Lucks, Materials Recovery/Education Coordinator, 864-2005.
