Small Vaccine Shipment Arrives this Holiday Week

A shipment of only 2,900 doses of H1N1 vaccine arrived in Springfield Tuesday, November 24, 2009 in advance of the Thanksgiving holiday. The shipment contained nasal mist, multi-dose vials and pre-filled, Thimerosal-free vaccine for pregnant women.  In addition the health department received 260 doses of H1N1 vaccine from partner counties in the state.

“We are pleased that local public health agencies across the state are working together to reallocate vaccine as the need arises,” says assistant director of health Clay Goddard. “The most important thing is to vaccinate Missouri residents against H1N1 as safely and as quickly as possible.”

So far 30,198 H1N1 vaccinations have been given in Greene County. That’s 71% of the vaccine that had been received at that point.

Flu cases continue to decrease, for the fourth week in a row.  Only 20 laboratory-confirmed cases of influenza were reported to the health department in the last reporting week (Nov 16 – 22). Eighty-four percent (84%) of the cases continue to be in the people under 25 years old, and 51% of the cases were in children 5 to 14 years old.

“The continued decrease in flu cases means we are most likely on the downward side of the current wave of illness,” adds Goddard. “However, we typically see a spike in seasonal flu cases after the holidays, so we encourage everyone to continue following the basic prevention guidelines – get vaccinated, wash your hands and keep a distance from people who are sick.”

The H1N1 and Seasonal Flu Answer Line continues to receive about 100 calls a day. The public is encouraged to call 417-874-1228, Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm except during the lunch hour (noon – 1:00 pm), to have their questions answered by a live operator. Recorded information is available by calling 417-864-1166.
