For Immediate Release

Jefferson Avenue Traffic Signal Removal

The City of Springfield will begin the process to remove a mid-block traffic signal on Jefferson Avenue near Cherry Street on Dec. 28, 2009.

The mid-block signal was installed to serve students attending St. Agnes School. School officials have informed the City that there are no students who use the signal now to walk to and from school and it is not anticipated to be necessary in the future. St. Agnes parents have been notified and have not expressed any concerns about the plan.

The first step will be placing bags over the signal heads for a four-week period. After that, a final decision will be made on removing the signal completely. Barring any unforeseen concerns, the signal will be removed during the week of Jan. 25, 2010.
