Traffic Accident Involving Pursuit Under Investigation

Christina Campbell, age 27, a resident of Greene County, died last evening (12/23/09) at St Johns Medical Center. At approximately 0250 hours on 12/22/09, a Springfield Police Officer attempted to stop Ms. Campbell in the area of Sunshine and Jefferson in her ‘98 Mustang for erratic driving and suspicion of driving while intoxicated. Ms. Campbell refused to stop and an authorized pursuit ensued, which traveled through the center of town at speeds exceeding 75 mph.  The pursuit ended with Ms. Campbell’s vehicle becoming involved in a single-vehicle traffic accident just north of the intersection of Benton and Commercial, where Benton Ave. ends at BNSF’s Commercial Street rail yard. Campbell’s vehicle caught fire during the crash and pursuing officers were able to extinguish the flames and assist her until EMS crews arrived. She was then taken by ambulance to St Johns for treatment of her injuries. The accident investigation and cause of death are still under investigation with an autopsy taking place today.
