Fatality Truck, Bicycle Crash Under Investigation

The Springfield Police Department is investigating a fatality crash that occurred last evening (12/29) at 7:36pm. According to witnesses, the driver of a Toyota pickup was eastbound on High St. at the four-way stop intersection of Clifton and High. The pickup started across the intersection after stopping for the stop sign. At this time, a 14 year old male was northbound on the sidewalk riding a bicycle. The juvenile failed to stop at the intersection. When the 14 year old entered the intersection on the bicycle, a collision occurred between the bicyclist and pickup. The juvenile was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

The bicyclist was identified as Zhamar Malik Young, 14 years of age, of Springfield, Mo. He was transported to St. John’s Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The driver of the Toyota Pickup was identified as Charles Mitchell, 62 years of age, of Springfield, Mo.

No charges have been filed and the accident is still under investigation.
