Public Information Director Announces Resignation
City Public Information Director Louise Whall Knauer has announced her intention to resign effective April 30, 2010 in order to accept a new position.
Whall Knauer will join the Community Foundation of the Ozarks on May 3, 2010 as Senior Vice President of Communications/Marketing.
She has served as Director of Public Information since January 2001 after working in Springfield media since 1983.
“It is difficult to leave the City, especially our wonderful PIO staff and supportive Leadership Team colleagues, City Managers and Councilmembers over more than nine years,” Whall Knauer said. “But I have been inspired for many years by the Community Foundation’s impressive impact on Springfield and all across our region. I’m very excited for the opportunity to add value to the CFO’s commitment to building better lives and communities.”
The Department of Public Information is responsible for media and community relations; the Citizen Service Request Office; content coordination of the City Web site; CityView video services and government-access channel; special event coordination; multi-media design and production; and the Busch Building reception desk.
Some of the Department’s recent accomplishments include: An overall restructuring and redesign of the City Web site; CityView conversion to digital cable and full Internet videostreaming; new “Tuesdays with Council” video programming of weekly lunch meetings; the “CityTalk” bi-weekly radio program; addition of social-networking outreach via Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Nixle.com; and partnering in development of the SpringfieldSource.org electronic civic newsletter.
“Louise has always exemplified professionalism, hard work, and political astuteness. While it is the City's loss, I'm certain she will apply those same qualities to her work at the CFO,” City Manager Greg Burris said. “Louise has accomplished great things at the City and has been instrumental in many major initiatives. She will certainly be missed and we wish her well in her new position.”
Burris said he will decide soon how to allocate the director’s responsibilities while the position remains open as part of the ongoing hiring freeze.
