Tammy Nguyen Wins Arbor Day Poster Contest
Pershing Elementary School fifth grade student Tammy Nguyen is the overall citywide winner of the 2010 Springfield Fifth Grade Arbor Day Poster Contest. She joins 11 other students who were recognized in the annual contest. More than 400 fifth-grade students from Springfield area schools participated this year.
Tammy Nguyen’s winning poster was selected by local tree experts, the Missouri Community Forestry Council, and the Springfield Tree City USA Citizens’ Advisory Committee. The local contest is part of the National Arbor Day Foundation’s national competition. The contest asked students to create a poster reflecting the theme “Trees are Terrific… and Energy Wise!”
As the citywide first place winner, Tammy will receive a gift from the Missouri Department of Conservation, and a framed certificate from Springfield City Council and the Tree City USA Citizens’ Advisory Committee. A tree also will be planted at Pershing School in honor of Tammy and her teacher, Deborah Hostetler. The tree will be planted by Springfield Public Schools and Springfield Public Works Department. The tree will be listed in the Springfield Tree Registry as the “Nguyen/Hostetler Chinquapin Oak.”
“Students like Tammy have learned about the importance of trees to our environment and how they can make a difference,” says Bridget Dierks, Chair of the Tree City USA Citizens Advisory Committee, which hosts the local poster contest. “The poster contest is a fun yet educational way to help students understand the value that trees have in the environment. We realize that an awareness of the relationship of trees and our environment begins at a young age. The Tree City USA Citizens Advisory Committee helps promote many conservation education programs, like the recognition of Arbor Day and the poster competition.”
All 12 winning students will be honored at a special ceremony at 5 p.m., Friday, April 2, at Jordan Valley Park. A listing of all student winners and schedule of their award ceremonies is attached.
