Kick Off Event for Family Cross-Country Bike Ride

The Springfield-Greene County Park Board will partner with Murrs Across America by hosting a “Spring Out Springfield Family Jamboree” community kick-off event on Saturday, April 17 in Jordan Valley Park, 735 E. Trafficway.

Free activities for the public begin at 10:30 a.m., and will feature sponsor and service organization booths, activities for kids and local musical groups.

The family-focused event also features a 1.2-mile bike ride at 10 a.m., as well as an unsupported, longer city route tour for more avid bikers, including a park-to-park poker run with prizes. The family bike ride is $25 for a family of four and the Parks Tour/Poker Run is $25 per participant. Lunch is provided as part of the entry fee. On-site registration begins at 9 a.m., and families can pre-register at www.murrbike.com .

The event will serve as a kick off for Murrs Across America, a cross-country bike tour to raise awareness for family engagement, parks, health and environment. Springfield husband and wife, Stuart and Kate, Jane (age 4) and Brady (age 2) will begin their 4,403.2-mile journey the day after the event, Sunday, April 18. The family will bike from St. Augustine, Fla. to Seaside, Ore. over four months, and will return to Springfield by the end of August in time for Jane to start kindergarten.

The Murrs continue to solicit sponsorships to fund their epic adventure. They will sell Web site advertising at the event, along with space on a 12-ft. by 8-ft. banner that will track their progress over the summer and be located in Jordan Valley Park.
